Contaminated Resurgence is a Media Studies project from first year at the RCA.
It looks at the polluted Grand Union Canal through cyanotype making as a journey timeline, depicting how nature along the canal is still affected and intertwined with its history.
Every mile for five miles between Hunton Bridge and Apsley in Hertfordshire, a digital photo and vegetation sample was taken, acting as pairs, with five layers of history to each cyanotype.
The paper which is 16 years old and purchased from the oldest mechanical paper mill in the country situated on the canal.
The text which consists of retyped newspaper articles and shipping logs from the time.
The water and goods. Charcoal, rust, ash and lime juice once carried along the canal are sprayed and sprinkled on just before UV exposure. The goods effected the paper in unique and uncontrollable ways.
The depiction of digital negative or vegetation sample which are degraded due to the impact the contaminants still have on the canal.
Contaminated Resurgence shows the intertwined history of the water, pollution, goods and nature of The Grand Union Canal, resulting in unpredictable image outcomes.
