Patient Ground reimagines a future lithium quarry in Cornwall as a landscape of learning, questioning the growing separation between education and the environments it seeks to explain. While children are taught about climate change, geology and ecology within conventional classrooms, Cornwall has also lost a culture of learning once embedded in its mining landscapes, where knowledge was passed between generations through observation, labour and apprenticeship.
The race to decarbonise is becoming ever more important, and as such presents a paradox. The material needed to support a sustainable future still relies on the heavy extraction of ‘green’ resources from the ground. The quarrying in this project therefore acts as a ‘pre-performance,’ the necessary framework to allow for future legacy uses; the education and cultural site.
Situated within the proposed Trelavour Downs lithium quarry, the project argues that extraction and education should not exist in isolation. Instead, the future legacy of the quarry informs the mining process itself, encouraging a more patient and equitable approach to excavation through the acts of carving spaces without a pre-determined function, that balances economic value with long-term social, cultural and environmental benefit.
The Quarry School transforms the landscape into the curriculum. Rather than learning through abstraction, children develop knowledge through direct engagement with rock, water, weather, making and ecological restoration. Former miners and local communities become educators, re-establishing intergenerational knowledge exchange while creating new forms of stewardship. Spaces are used depending on their qualities; light, shadow, overhangs or enclosures.
The ground remains marked by its history. Its scars neither erased or celebrated.
Instead, the occupants inhabits that wound and learns from it.
Ultimately, Patient Ground is not simply a proposal for a school, but for a new inheritance; one where post-extractive landscapes become places of care, responsibility and participation, ensuring the final resource extracted is not lithium, but a deeper understanding of our relationship with the land.
